New York Philharmonic Concert to Bid Farewell to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Welcome Secretary-General-Designate António Guterres

The world-renowned New York Philharmonic, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, paid special tribute to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki‑moon as he prepared to conclude his 10-year term at the helm of the world body at the end of December.  The concert was also an opportunity for a musical welcome to his successor, António Guterres, who took office on 1 January 2017.

Screening of Documentary "Before the Flood"

On 20 October 2016, the Department of Public Information organized a screening of National Geographic's climate change documentary "Before the Flood". Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is featured in the film that follows Leonardo DiCaprio in his role as a UN Messenger of Peace as he explores the topic of climate change and asks questions of how its catastrophic impact on our planet can be averted.

On 27 October 2015, the United Nations held a special event entitled Markings and Music.
Organized in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and in honour of the late legendary Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, the event featured Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson and Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand, with music inspired by readings from Hammarskjöld's book Markings of 1963.

70th Anniversary United Nations Day Concert

On 24 October 2015, UN Day, The United Nations celebrated its 70th anniversary. To mark this very special occasion, a concert featuring the Korean Broadcasting System Traditional Music Orchestra was held in the General Assembly Hall, on Friday 23 October. The orchestra performed a rich array of musical pieces including the Korean folk song Arirang, which was registered by UNESCO on its Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists in 2012. Special guests performing with the orchestra included United Nations Messenger of Peace Lang Lang, Korean K-pop duo Davichi and the Harlem Gospel Choir.

Global Goals Projections

To mark UN70 and bring visibility to the new sustainable development goals, the United Nations in partnership with Project Everyone, Global Citizen and others presented massive-scale projections against the General Assembly Hall and Secretariat Building that visually depicted each of the 17 goals. Organized by The Post-2015 Development Planning Unit with the support of the Department of Public Information, the event took place on Tuesday, 22 September 2015.

Second Unveiling of the Portinari Murals

To celebrate the return of the Portinari Murals War and Peace to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of Brazil, in collaboration with the Projeto Portinari  and the Department of Public Information, organized a special event in the General Assembly Hall on Tuesday, 8 September 2015.

In his welcome remarks, The Secretary-General said, War and Peace are more than magnificent works of art – they are Portinari's call to action. Thanks to him, all leaders who enter the United Nations see the terrible toll of war – and the universal dream for peace.

Shanghai Symphony Concert

On Friday, 28 August 2015, the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations hosted a concert to commemorate the founding of the United Nations and the end of the Second World War.

Organized with the support of the Department of Public Information, the concert featured the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest and best-known ensembles of its kind in Asia.

Ceremony in Commemoration of the Return of the Peace Bell to the Japanese Garden

World Autism Awareness Day 2015
