Screening of Documentary "Chasing Coral"

A special screening of the documentary film Chasing Coral, and a conversation with the film's Emmy Award-winning director Jeff Orlowski and expert guests took place on Thursday, 8 June 2017 at United Nations Headquarters during The Ocean Conference.

Chasing Coral focuses on the effects of climate change on the world’s coral reef ecosystem. With the use of world-class photographic technology, along with a team of divers, photographers and scientists, Chasing Coral captures how coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. Chasing Coral premiered and won the Audience Award for Documentary at Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 and was released on Netflix in July the same year.

The Panel Discussion was moderated by Ayana Johnson, Founder and Principal of Ocean Collectiv, and featured:

  • Jeff Orlowski, Director and Producer of Chasing Coral, Founder of Exposure Labs
  • Cassie Flynn, UN Development Programme Climate Change Advisor
  • Richard Vevers, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Agency

Acting Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Mr. Maher Nasser and President of the seventy-first session of the General Assembly H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson also delivered remarks at the screening event.

This documentary screening was presented by Netflix and Exposure Labs in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Public Information to raise awareness of the serious impacts of climate change on the world’s oceans.
