First Celebration of the International Day of Yoga

Following recognition by the United Nations General Assembly of the holistic benefits of the ancient Indian practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations, some 300 people joined Yoga Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar for the first celebration of the International Day of Yoga on Sunday, 21 June 2015, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in cooperation with the Department of Public Information, the event featured speeches by H.E. Mr. Asoke Kumar Mukerji, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations; H.E. Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India; H.E. Mr. Sam Kutesa, President of the 69th session of the General Assembly; H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Ms. Tulsi Gabbard, United States Congresswoman; and Mr. Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, as well as videos and a yoga demonstration.
