Angry Birds for a Happy Planet Campaign Launch

In March 2016, the United Nations Department of Public Information, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures Entertainment launched the Angry Birds for a Happy Planet, an online and social media environmental awareness campaign in support of the United Nations International Day of Happiness.  Centered on the Sustainable Development Goal #13 – to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, the campaign featured Red and other characters of The Angry Birds Movie.

The campaign harnessed massive global social media outreach, using #AngryBirdsHappyPlanet and encouraged people to adopt eco-friendly lifestyle choices and act in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. As a defining element of the campaign, the Secretary-General designated Red Honorary Ambassador for Green on the International Day of Happiness and encouraged audiences to make Angry Birds happy by taking climate action in his public service announcement.

The campaign reached close to 750 million impressions on Twitter and the Secretary-General's video message was viewed over 400,000 times on UN channels alone. The campaign launch was covered in 140 separate television news broadcast stories globally.

On Saturday, 22 October 2016, the Angry Birds for a Happy Planet campaign won the award for Excellence in Advertising at the Environmental Media Association's 26th Annual Awards Gala held at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.

A pioneer in linking the power of celebrity to environmental awareness in Hollywood, The Environmental Media Association was founded on the belief that through television, film and music, the entertainment community has the power to influence the environmental awareness of millions of people. Since 1991, the EMA Awards has celebrated the entertainment industry's environmental efforts.

This was the second award bestowed upon the campaign in a matter of days. On 19 October, the United Nations Foundation honored Rovio Entertainment, the creator of the original Angry Birds mobile game, and Sony Pictures Entertainment with a Global Leadership Award for their part in the campaign.
