Goal of the Week: SDG4 - Quality Education

Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development. Major progress has been made towards increasing access to education at all levels and increasing enrolment rates in schools particularly for women and girls. Basic literacy skills have improved tremendously, yet bolder efforts are needed to make even greater strides for achieving universal education goals. For example, the world has achieved equality in primary education between girls and boys, but few countries have achieved that target at all levels of education.

Literacy project for refugees - 'small actions ripple big'

In July and August 2017, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut provided support, coordination, and training services to youth volunteers from the international non-profit organization AIESEC.

The activity was part of the MyBookshelf: Language and Cultural Program for Refugees project to teach the English language through learning and cultural activities. It also helps promote cultural understanding.

As in previous years, due to the number of high-level events and increased security arrangements, the United Nations Headquarters (and the surrounding streets) will only be accessible to UN staff and Member State delegations from 15 to 29 September 2017.

Representatives of NGOs in possession of regular, annual UN Grounds Passes for UNHQ New York will not have access to (or nearby) UNHQ in New York during this period without special event passes.

The International Day of Peace 2017

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme for 2017 is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.”
