Press Release

The theme of Portraits of Women is violence against women and girls. The exhibition includes two components: Congo/Women: Portraits of War and Women on the Frontline.

Congo/Women: Portraits of War highlights the mix of conditions that allow violence against women and girls to reach epidemic levels. It also underlines how the lack of medical infrastructure makes it difficult to address the consequences of this physical and psychological violation.

Women on the Frontline showcases a series of investigative videos that focus on a specific form of sexual violence.

Portraits of Women is organised by the Art Works Projects(AWP) and Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media at Columbia College in Chicago (for Congo/Women: Portraits of War) and by dev.tv (for Women on the Frontline). It is endorsed by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
